Trump will be Trumped on Unwinding Climate Change Policies

Ok, we have spoken about politics over science…and the fact that it is now normal to have a page devoted in major newspapers just to the untruths of the President, so this should not come as a surprise…but…

In signing his executive order to undo President Obama’s climate change initiative, this President has simply pandered to coal miners, but in fact, he has been about as truthful in his statements about jobs as he usually is about everything else. Namely, the only people who might make money on this change are the owners.

coal and climate change policiesFirst, he is wrong about energy independence. We have already become nearly energy independent over the past 10 years. Also, he is wrong about jobs. Even where there are coal mines that are open, they are more mechanized than ever. Third, there is little likelihood that power plants will shift from natural gas to coal, thus demand will continue to drop…Just take a look at China. Even they, massive users of coal, are trying to get away from coal and thus further lowering demand.

No, as usual, this President panders to fear, preys on the financially weak and gives to those who need it less.

This order is nothing more than a sham masquerading as policy. It shows no more consideration about people, the future of this country, or the future of the planet that we live on than his choice of the EPA administrator.

Oh, and did I mention that coal is very dirty and causes serious lung ailments?

Former EPA Administrator Warns of Future Mistakes

epa administratorWe all know that those who do not learn from the past are condemned to repeat it. Mr. Ruckelshaus, having served two terms as EPA administrator should know. He was there at the beginning and again to fix the problems created by another President who did not get it. People want clean air and water and land. Business needs a strong Federal program that creates a uniform field of play with regard to the environment. Finally, we all benefit from environmental sustainability….especially the economy.

Well, I have said before that I have always admired Mr. Ruckelshaus. He gets it. Maybe, just maybe, the new Administrator of the EPA can understand the lessons of history and think about the future.

Fuel Economy….The President Clearly Does not Understand the Term LEADERSHIP

In yet another move to undo what makes sense for the country, it appears that fuel economy standards will be rolled back from the goals set during President Obama’s administration. Well, why not. As I have noted in prior blogs, this President really is all about short term benefits for fossil fuels.

Fuel EconomyOf course, this is just a part of the mistaken world of “let’s take it now and the hell with the future” that he is proving to be his M.O. Every time that fuel standards have been raised, the auto industry has cried…and then met them. The argument now is of course, that people want bigger cars and trucks because fuel is relatively cheap.

Thus, my title…LEADERSHIP means leading…not following the sheep. As soon as prices for oil rise, which they will at some point, we will switch again and fuel economy will become important. But, rather than leading us into a better and more economically and environmentally sustainable world, the ignorant are pandering to the informed who can manipulate them.

Representative Leonard Lance Wrong on His Pipeline Statements

Recently, among a rash of actions by the President, Mr. Lance stated that the President was right to move both the Keystone XXL and Dakota Access Pipelines to be built.

Leonard LanceI have commented on both projects before, but Mr. Lance’s comments deserve to be criticized as what they are; pandering and ignorant.

His support is based on two claims. One that the pipelines will help to reduce the price of oil and two that they have been deemed environmental safe and endorsed by labor unions and business organizations alike.

Well, on the first point, what is his evidence? Oil has remained fairly stable as a result of conservation activities as much as new sources of energy. Also, the Alaskan pipeline was built with many of the same promises. Guess what, the oil from that pipeline rarely made it to the U.S. Market.

As to environmental safety. The number of spills from oil pipelines is not exactly reassuring. As to labor unions and business endorsing the pipelines, well, that makes sense. They benefit from the work.

No Mr. Lance, the President’s action on these pipelines is not well thought out and your support is poorly thought out as well.
