Representative Leonard Lance Wrong on His Pipeline Statements

Recently, among a rash of actions by the President, Mr. Lance stated that the President was right to move both the Keystone XXL and Dakota Access Pipelines to be built.

Leonard LanceI have commented on both projects before, but Mr. Lance’s comments deserve to be criticized as what they are; pandering and ignorant.

His support is based on two claims. One that the pipelines will help to reduce the price of oil and two that they have been deemed environmental safe and endorsed by labor unions and business organizations alike.

Well, on the first point, what is his evidence? Oil has remained fairly stable as a result of conservation activities as much as new sources of energy. Also, the Alaskan pipeline was built with many of the same promises. Guess what, the oil from that pipeline rarely made it to the U.S. Market.

As to environmental safety. The number of spills from oil pipelines is not exactly reassuring. As to labor unions and business endorsing the pipelines, well, that makes sense. They benefit from the work.

No Mr. Lance, the President’s action on these pipelines is not well thought out and your support is poorly thought out as well.

Why Bother with Science When Politics Will Do?

environmental protection agencyThe AP has reported that, and this says so much…”the Trump Administration is mandating that any studies or data from scientists at the Environmental Protection Agency undergo review by political appointees before they can be released to the public.”

Am I the only one who sees a problem here? I don’t think so.

I understand that in the end it is political appointees that set policy. But this level of restriction is the highest that has ever been imposed on the EPA.

My favorite order of the administration is that the EPA has been told to strip mention of climate change from the EPA website. REALLY!!!???? Why not…an ignorant population can’t complain about facts that they are not given. Better yet, let’s simply give out Alternative Facts…(Tired of this phrase…I hope so..)

The prior administration in Canada forbid staff from even using the term Climate Change. Yes, not using the words will certainly help stop Climate Change from happening.

Controversial Pipelines Approved: Or Let’s Ignore the Facts

Mr. Trump has reopened the controversial Keystone and Dakota Access oil pipelines.

I have written on the Keystone Pipeline before and noted that it may not be as bad environmentally as proposed. However, there are certainly serious concerns that have been raised regarding this pipeline that need to be considered and of course, will now be ignored.

The Dakota Access Pipeline is a different situation. The fight is less over the pipeline, than its route. But as they say in the Whitehouse today, Dam the facts, full speed ahead.

dakota access pipeline oil spillWhen we see the impact of pipeline leaks, see the related article, why aren’t we more concerned about their routes?

As a last point, both pipelines have been touted as a means of increasing U.S. energy security.

That same claim was made about the Alaskan Oil Pipeline…yet, most of that oil was sold overseas for increased profit.

As we have continued to improve our energy efficiency, we have reduced our dependence on foreign oil. We have indeed increased output in the U.S. as well, but by reducing demand, we have a much greater impact on the need for more oil.

The only winners in this decision or oil companies.

The Attempted Destruction of Five Decades of Progress

I think that this quote from the recent New Yorker Article sums it up best…”…It’s clear that we’re about to witness the steady demolition, or attempted demolition, of the environmental protections that have been put in place over the past five decades.”

In a recently leaked memo, Trump’s priorities have been made clear….Stop the Clean Power Plan, allow wetlands destruction, stop cleaning up Chesapeake Bay. To further this position, he is placing a person who clearly dislikes the EPA and has sued it 14 times.

clean power plan

But let’s not stop there. Let’s issue gag orders on to prevent factual information from being released…

This article is rife with what could at best be described as frightening information.

What is saddest of all is the fact that environmental protections have been economically shown to benefit profits, jobs and overall expenditures. A clean environment means lower respiratory illness rates, cleaner and more easily treated water and better long term economic sustainability.

Of course, if you are a short term profit monger, then protecting the environment makes no sense.
